The Portland State Vikings and the Oregon State Beavers meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Gill Coliseum. Portland State put up a disappointing 9-13 overall record last year, finishing far down the standings in the Big Sky. As for Oregon State, they logged a 20-13 run last season and made it all the way to the Elite Eight. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Portland State took a big step back in 2020-21, finishing at just 9-13 overall and 6-8 in the Big Sky Conference. In the standings, the Vikings landed ahead of just three teams: Sacramento State, Northern Arizona and Idaho (in the basement at 1-17).

In January-February the Vikings had a nice run, winning six of seven games. Portland State stumbled into the postseason with a pair of losses to Southern Utah, then lost in the First Round of the Big Sky Tournament to Northern Arizona 77-66.

Over on the Oregon State side, they had their work cut out in a tough Pac-12 Conference but still did well. The Beavers were 20-13 overall and 10-10 in conference play, leaving the team in sixth place behind Oregon, USC, Colorado, UCLA and Arizona.

The Beavers caught fire once the postseason hit, beating UCLA, Oregon and Colorado on the way to a Pac-12 Tournament championship. In the NCAA Tournament Oregon State kept it going by beating Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Loyola-Chicago before an Elite Eight loss to Houston 67-61.

The Vikings are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Tuesday games and 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 road games. Portland State is 1-4 ATS in the last five overall.

Meanwhile, the Beavers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven at home and 20-5-1 ATS in their last 26 overall. Oregon State is 2-7 ATS in their last nine Tuesday games.

PICK: Still going with Oregon State here. The Beavers benefitted greatly from an epic hot streak in postseason play last year, but with Ethan Thompson and Zach Reichle gone the team will have to employ some new faces in key roles. Jarod Lucas will likely help fill some of that Thompson gap after 12.7 PPG last year, as will Minnesota transfer Tre Williams. Senior forward Warith Alatishe will help anchor the defense, which was a major strength for last year’s squad. There may be some early bumps in the road but Oregon State should be able to make a play for another national tournament run this season.
