Davidson’s only win of the season so far came courtesy of Delaware in their opener. The Wildcats had a nice offensive outing in that one during a 93-71 win. Game two didn’t go as well for Davidson, as they lost 65-60 to San Francisco to fall to .500 on the year.
In the Thursday Myrtle Beach Invitational matchup against New Mexico State, Davidson held a 33-28 lead at halftime. The Wildcats gave up 47 points from there in an eventual 75-64 loss. Top scorer Luka Brajkovic posted 17 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
Over on the Penn side, they lost their first two games to Florida State and George Mason this year. The Quakers bounced back with victories versus Bucknell 73-68 and Lafayette 85-57 in their next two games, however.
In Thursday’s game, Penn and Utah State were right with each other for two halves and an overtime period. Ultimately the Quakers were outscored in OT 14-6 in a tough 87-79 defeat. Leading the way was Jordan Dingle with 31 points, five boards and four assists.
Penn is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games. The over is 12-5 in the Quakers’ last 17 Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games. Davidson is 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Penn. The Quakers matched Utah State punch for punch on Thursday in their difficult loss, thanks in large part to Dingle’s heroics on the court. Overall it was a good team outing; the Aggies just proved to be too much in the end.
As for Davidson, they had a good first half against New Mexico State but ultimately couldn’t keep up. The Wildcats shot 40 percent from the floor (to New Mexico State’s 49.0) and were out-rebounded 36-29 during the game. The starters played well overall but the bench only produced two points. I like Davidson to hang around here, but I don’t think they’ve got the legs to stay in it.
