The Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Portland Pilots meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Chiles Center. Here’s a Portland vs Gonzaga prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Portland vs Gonzaga pick.

Gonzaga Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs were able to rattle off wins in their first seven straight games, then fell versus Michigan in a home matchup on November 26. Since then Gonzaga has wins over Kentucky, North Florida, UCLA, Campbell, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego, Seattle U, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Washington State, Seattle U, Pepperdine, San Francisco and Saint Mary’s. That makes for a 22-1 overall run in 23 games this year for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday in the Saint Mary’s game, Gonzaga was trailing at the break by a 38-34 margin. The Bulldogs woke up in the second half though, taking a 39-27 advantage the rest of the way during a comeback win 73-65 at home. Graham Ike led the way on 30 points with four rebounds while both Emmanuel Innocenti (five rebounds) and Jalen Warley (seven rebounds) notched 10 points and two assists each.

Portland Pilots Betting Preview

Over on the Portland side, they were able to win seven of their first 11 games, falling to Wyoming, Northern Colorado, St. Thomas-MN and Stanford in that time. The Pilots have only won three games since then though, losing otherwise to Oregon, UC Santa Barbara, Washington State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, Pacific and Washington State otherwise in succession. Over the first 24 outings of the year that gives the Pilots a 10-14 overall record.

In their matchup on the road versus Washington State back on Saturday, the Pilots were sitting in the locker room with a rough 53-31 deficit. Portland didn’t end up getting any closer than that, enduring a 51-43 stretch in the second half on the way to a 104-74 loss in the end. Joel Foxwell topped the team with 21 points, five rebounds and two assists while James O’Donnell added 16 points with four rebounds.

Why the Portland Pilots will win

  • Portland has won eight of its last nine night games at Earle A. & Virginia H. Chiles Center.
  • Portland has won the first half in each of its last six night games at Earle A. & Virginia H. Chiles Center.

Why the Gonzaga Bulldogs will win

  • Gonzaga has won each of its last 42 February games as an AP-ranked team against a non-AP-ranked team.
  • Portland has lost each of its last 24 games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • Gonzaga has won the first half in each of its last 16 February games as a top-15 AP-ranked team against a non-AP-ranked team.

Portland vs Gonzaga Prediction

I’ll lean toward Gonzaga but I’m probably staying away. The Bulldogs had a slow start versus Saint Mary’s in their latest outing but eventually prevailed thanks to 46.6 percent shooting, a 36-31 advantage on the boards and a 36-20 edge on points in the paint. The free throw shooting (13-of-21 for 61.9 percent) could have been better, though. Gonzaga has built their win streak to a nice 15 games now, and they’ve scored 71 or more points in 14 of those outings.

As for Portland, they shot a tepid 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from outside and 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) from the line while giving up 55.4 percent shooting from the field in their latest loss to Washington State over the weekend. The Pilots are just 3-10 in the last 13 outings and sitting on a three-game skid with 74 or more points surrendered in each of those. Gonzaga shouldn’t have too many issues scoring here.
