The Portland State Vikings and the Portland Pilots meet Friday in college basketball action from Chiles Center. This will be Portland State’s first game of the year. The Vikings managed to go 14-17 overall last season. As for Portland, they’re 2-0 following wins versus Lewis & Clark and Florida A&M. Portland State didn’t finish particularly well last season, going 14-17 overall with a 10-10 run in Big Sky Conference games. That would leave the Vikings ahead of only four other teams in the standings: Sacramento State, Idaho, Idaho State and Northern Arizona.

The Vikings were just 4-13 in late January, but to their credit the team finished strong. After an 8-3 run to close out the regular season, Portland State beat Idaho State and Southern Utah before falling to Northern Colorado in the Big Sky Tournament.

Over on the Portland side, they kicked off the season with a Monday matchup versus Lewis & Clark. Portland scored 46 points in the first half and cruised to an 89-62 victory. Leading the Pilots in scoring were Vasilije Vucinic and Mike Meadows, each with 18 points.

In game two versus Florida A&M, Portland cruised to a blowout win once again. The Pilots were up 42-21 by the break and finished with a 91-54 advantage. Portland’s Kristian Sjolund posted 20 points and six rebounds to lead the way.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Portland. Sure, it’s only been two games versus sub-par opponents so far, but the Pilots are looking good already. Portland has scored a combined 180 points through their two appearances, holding opponents to 116 combined points. In the win over Florida A&M, the Pilots shot a nice 55.8 percent from the field and collected 42 rebounds. As for Portland State, they’ve got a vastly different roster than last year; only four players are returning. It may take the team a few games to find their chemistry and I don’t think they’ll cover here.
