The Rider Broncs and the Providence Friars meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Rider went 14-19 overall last year, landing far down the standings of the MAAC. As for Providence, they’re coming off a Big East regular-season championship and a Sweet Sixteen appearance last season. Rider managed to take a step forward last season, but still came up with a losing record. The Broncs went 14-19 overall with an 8-12 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. That left the team ahead of only Canisius and Quinnipiac in the standings.
The Broncs suffered greatly from consistency last season. Rider had just one instance of a win streak longer than two games (four), and the team battled through several rough spots. The Broncs made it to the semifinals of the conference tourney, where they lost to Monmouth.
Over on the Providence side, they had a much better result last season at 27-6 overall and 14-3 in the Big East. The Friars were regular-season champions atop the standings, but took an early exit in the Big East Tournament courtesy of Creighton.
Providence stormed through non-conference play at 10-1, and the team finished the regular season without dropping consecutive games. After the Friars’ conference tournament loss, they made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in the national tourney where they lost to Kansas.
PICK: I’m likely staying with the Friars. The bad news for Providence is that eight players—and all five starters—are gone from last year’s team. The good news is that there’s still plenty of talent here, and with any luck the Friars should be competitive again in 2022-23. It’ll be a much younger team featuring five transfers. Holdovers Jared Bynum, Alan Breed and Ed Croswell will need to step it up on the court as well as in the locker room. This is a good place to start, and I think the Friars will come out firing.
