St. John’s Red Storm
The Red Storm got off to a nice 12-4 start this year with losses to only Michigan, Dayton, Boston College and UConn. St. John’s is 2-6 since then, taking losses from Creighton, Seton Hall, Marquette, Xavier, UConn and Marquette again. The wins otherwise were over Villanova and DePaul.
On Saturday in the rematch versus Marquette, the Red Storm went into the break with a 47-38 lead. St. John’s faded from there however, losing 86-75 after a 48-28 second half deficit. Tops in scoring during the defeat was Daniss Jenkins with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Providence Friars
Over on the Friars’ side, they lost to Kansas State, Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Creighton, St. John’s and Xavier over their first 20 outings of the season. Providence has struggled since then on a 1-3 run with losses to UConn, Villanova and Butler mixed with a lone OT win versus Creighton.
In the road matchup versus Butler over the weekend, the Friars went into the second half trailing 34-25. Providence made a game of it with a 47-41 second half but still lost 75-72 in a tough result. Corey Floyd was the leading team scorer on 20 points with four rebounds and two assists.
ANDREW’S FREE ST. JOHN’S VS PROVIDENCE PREDICTION
I’ll stay with Providence here, but you could make a case either way. The Friars didn’t play particularly well in their latest loss versus Butler, giving up 51.9 percent from the field with a 40-28 rebounding deficit. Providence did score 13 points off 16 Butler turnovers, but it wasn’t enough to win. That’s three straight road losses for the Friars, who will be happy to get back home for this one.
These teams last saw each other back on January 10 in a 75-73 road loss for Providence. Both teams shot over 44.2 percent from the field with double-digit turnovers and 33 rebounds each; it was a close matchup. Providence’s 40-29 first-half deficit didn’t help however, so they’ll need to get off to a faster start in the rematch. I think the Friars will pull it off and get some revenge.
