The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Purdue Boilermakers meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Mackey Arena in West Lafayette. Here’s a Purdue vs Minnesota prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Purdue vs Minnesota pick.
Minnesota Golden Gophers Betting Preview
Minnesota opened the year on a nice run then hit the skids in late November. The Golden Gophers hit a 4-1 record out of the gate with a lone loss to Missouri among wins over Gardner-Webb, Alcorn State, Green Bay and Chicago State. Three straight losses came next versus San Francisco, Stanford and Santa Clara. After a win over Indiana last week, the Gophers are now sitting at 5-4 overall on the year.
In the Indiana game last Wednesday, the Gophers kicked off the game with a 33-33 run, then hit 40 more points from there in an eventual win 73-64 at Williams Arena. Minnesota was led by Langston Reynolds (five rebounds; four assists) and Cade Tyson (eight rebounds; three assists), each with 17 points. Isaac Asuma added 15 points with seven boards and four assists in the winning effort for the Golden Gophers as well.
Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview
Over on the Purdue side, they kicked off the year with an eight-game win streak. The Boilermakers beat Evansville and Oakland in their first pair, then took out Alabama and Akron in the next two. That was followed by wins over Memphis and Texas Tech, then another pair of wins over Eastern Illinois and Rutgers. Purdue took their first loss over the weekend versus Iowa State however, leaving the team at 8-1 overall through their first nine games of the year.
In the Iowa State matchup on Saturday, Purdue was trailing by four points at halftime. The Boilermakers were outscored 46-27 the rest of the way in an 81-58 blowout loss at Mackey Arena. Braden Smith led the team on 11 points with eight assists and five rebounds. Oscar Cluff had 10 points and six boards, while Daniel Jacobsen had 10 points with three rebounds in 15 minutes of work on the floor during the loss.
Why the Purdue Boilermakers will win
- Purdue has won 38 of its last 39 games at Mackey Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Minnesota has lost each of its last eight games against Top 10 AP-ranked opponents.
- Purdue has won the first half in 29 of its last 32 night games at Mackey Arena.
Why the Minnesota Golden Gophers will win
- Minnesota has won four of its last five road games against Conference opponents.
- The road team has won the first half in six of the last seven games between Minnesota and Purdue.
Purdue vs Minnesota Prediction
I’ll lean toward Purdue. The Boilermakers are coming off a rough loss to Iowa State at home on Saturday though, so they’ll really need to assert themselves in this one. Purdue shot a tepid 40.7 percent from the field and just 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from outside in that one, along with 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from the line. The Boilermakers did pretty well on the boards (33) and with assists (17) but also had 15 turnovers in the upset loss. Purdue’s 58 points breaks a string of 80 or more points in every other game this year.
As for Minnesota, they’ve been off the court for a week but they’re still riding high after their nice win over Indiana last Wednesday. The Gophers shot 48.9 percent from the field in that one with a 36-22 rebounding edge and 30 points in the paint. That said, Minnesota also coughed up 16 turnovers along the way. Wednesday’s game is going to be another tough matchup for the Gophers; I like Purdue to reassert themselves and find their groove again.
