The Dayton Flyers and the Rhode Island Rams meet Monday in college basketball action from Ryan Center. Dayton is 17-8 on the season thus far and coming off a win over George Washington. Dayton managed a spotty 8-6 run over their first 14 games this year, but the team has found some rhythm since then. The Flyers are on a 9-2 stretch right now. They’ve beaten Fordham, Rhode Island, VCU, Duquesne and George Washington for their last five wins.
In the George Washington matchup on Saturday, the Flyers posted a nice 48-23 run in the first half and finished it off with a 32-31 stretch for an 80-54 blowout win. Leading scorer Kobe Elvis finished with 13 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Over on the Rhode Island side, their year began at 12-4 overall. The Rams would then hit an ugly six-game losing streak to George Washington, Richmond, Dayton, Fordham, UMass and VCU before bagging a win over Davidson this past weekend.
Matched up with Davidson on Saturday, the Rams were up 40-35 by halftime. The Rams then hung on with a 32-30 run for a much-needed 72-65 win. Jeremy Sheppard was the leading scorer with 23 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Rams are 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 after an ATS win. Rhode Island is 5-12 ATS in their last 17 Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Flyers are 7-1 ATS in the last eight Monday games and the over is 4-0 in their last four overall. The over is 5-2 in Dayton’s last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Dayton. The Flyers have hit a nice rhythm over this 9-2 run. They’ve scored 68 or more points in eight of those 11 games and have played some pretty good defense along the way.
As for Rhode Island, they were impressive in their last game against a tricky Davidson team but the six-game losing streak prior to that was pretty ugly. Dayton took the win 53-51 at home the last time these teams met up, and I think the Flyers can pull off the cover this time.
