The Canisius Golden Griffins and the Rider Broncs meet Sunday in college basketball action from Rider University Alumni Gym. Canisius is currently 7-13 on the year. The Griffins fell to Monmouth in their last outing. As for Rider, they’re sitting at 6-13 this season and coming off a loss to Fairfield. Canisius hit a 5-9 run in their first 14 games this year, notching wins over Fredonia State, Coppin State, Buffalo, FGCU and Quinnipiac. It’s been a spotty 2-4 run since then with losses to Niagara, Manhattan, Saint Peter’s and Monmouth.
In the Monmouth game on Friday, the Griffins kept up in the first half with a 41-39 deficit by the break. Canisius fell behind 31-28 from there in a 72-67 loss. Armon Harried topped the team on 22 points with 10 rebounds, and Ahamadou Fofana posted 18 points.
Over on the Rider side, they managed a 5-8 record over their first 13 outings. The Broncs beat only Coppin State, Delaware State, Bucknell, Gwynedd-Mercy and Marist in that time. Rider has gone 1-5 in the last half-dozen, culminating in a loss to Fairfield.
On Friday matched up against Fairfield, the Broncs trailed 34-24 by halftime. Rider didn’t get any closer than that in an eventual 76-65 loss. Allen Powell topped the team on 21 points, and Dimencio Vaughn added 17 points with nine rebounds.
The Broncs are 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 after an ATS loss and 0-7 ATS in the last seven at home. Rider is 5-13-1 ATS in their last 19 overall.
Meanwhile, the Griffins are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven road games and the under is 5-1 in their last six on Sunday. The under is 5-1 in the Griffins’ last six road games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Canisius, but probably not going near it. This one seems like a coin flip. The Griffins eked out a 70-69 win the last time these teams played back on January 21. It was close most of the way: Canisius shot 43.4 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and Rider managed 41.8 percent with 41 rebounds. This rematch should be similarly tight and tough to call, but if the Griffins can get off to a good offensive start in the first half I think they’ll be okay.
