The Monmouth Hawks and the Rider Broncs meet Friday in college basketball action from Rider University Alumni Gym.
Monmouth enters this one at 11-7 on the year. As for Rider, they’re sitting at 5-15 overall. This will be a rematch of Thursday’s game featuring these same teams. In that one, Monmouth eked out a three-point overtime win. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Monmouth started out the season a little choppy, but evened things out in late January for an 8-4 record. The Hawks went 2-3 in the five games after that, recording a loss to Niagara and two losses to Iona in that stretch.
In Thursday’s game versus Rider, Monmouth fell behind 38-29 at the break but stormed back to force overtime and an eventual 77-74 comeback win. Leading the way for the Hawks was Melik Martin with 24 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Rider side, they haven’t been able to find much consistency in the win column this year. The Broncs went 3-7 through their first 10 games, then hit a 2-7 skid after that. The only wins during that time were versus Marist and Saint Peter’s.
In Thursday’s loss to Monmouth, Rider held a 39-30 deficit in the second half in the eventual three-point loss. Tops in scoring was Dwight Murray with 21 points, two rebounds and two assists.
The over is 4-1 in Rider’s last five Friday games and 6-2 in their last eight overall. Rider is 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games and 7-23-1 ATS in their last 31 as an underdog.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games and the over is 5-2 in their last seven as an underdog. Monmouth is 11-4 ATS in their last 15 as a favorite and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five as an underdog.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Monmouth. The Hawks had a couple of bad outings in the Iona games, but they’d previously been scoring pretty well over that 7-1 stretch. Thursday’s game featured a bad first half for Monmouth, but they were able to come back and tough out the victory admirably. Should be another great game.
