NJIT faced off against Merrimack in their first game of the year. The Highlanders scored just 23 points (and allowed 35) in the first half. Though the team got better from there NJIT still lost 61-54. Miles Coleman led the way on 19 points and six boards.
In game two, the Highlanders’ fortunes were much better. NJIT took a 36-23 advantage into halftime against Lehigh and would ride that wave to a 73-56 win. Dylan O’Hearn was the Highlanders’ top scorer in that one with 23 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Rutgers side, they opened up the year versus Lehigh. The Knights had a 36-31 deficit going into the break but eventually forced overtime, where Rutgers escaped with a 73-70 win. Clifford Omoruyi led the way on 16 points with nine rebounds.
In game two the Knights had a bizarre outing. Rutgers was outscored 23-16 in the first half, but gave up just 12 points from there in a 48-35 win. Both Omoruyi (11 points; 13 rebounds) and Ron Harper (13 points; 11 rebounds) doubled up for the Knights in that one.
The Knights are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five as a favorite. The under is 9-4 in Rutgers’ last 13 overall.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. NJIT is 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to try NJIT. That’s mostly due to what we’ve seen from Rutgers so far. Both games have been spotty for the Knights so far, and they shot an ugly 31.3 percent from the floor in their last game. The good news is that Rutgers turned in 49 rebounds and 12 assists, which helped immensely in the odd win over Merrimack.
As for NJIT, they’ve seen a few key contributors emerge who are putting up good stats over the first couple of games. If the Highlanders can start hitting shots early and go into halftime reasonably close, I think they’ll be fine on a cover.
