The Long Island University Sharks and the Sacred Heart Pioneers meet Wednesday in college basketball action from William H. Pitt Center. LIU is 3-7 so far this year. Long Island U opened up the year with four straight losses before a victory over Delaware State. The Sharks then lost to Delaware, Towson and Fordham before wins over Merchant Marine and Army.
In the Army game back on December 19, the Sharks got out to a big 56-33 edge at the break and cruised to the 90-65 blowout win. Leading scorer Eral Penn put up 23 points with five rebounds, and Isaac Kante doubled on 15 points and 11 boards.
Over on the Sacred Heart side, they started the year at 3-6 over their first nine with wins over La Salle, Fisher and Lafayette. Since then it’s been a 1-4 stretch with losses to Brown, Rhode Island, UMass Lowell and Hartford.
In the Hartford game, the Pioneers were up by seven points at halftime. Sacred Heart gave up 51 points from there in a 78-71 loss. Aaron Clarke led the team on 23 points with four assists, and Nico Galette added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Sacred Heart is 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 11-3 ATS in their last 14 after a straight-up loss. The under is 24-5-1 in the Pioneers’ last 30 at home.
Meanwhile, the Sharks are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and the under is 4-0 in their last four Wednesday games. The under is 5-0 in LIU’s last five road games.
PICK: I’m likely going to take a stab on Sacred Heart. We should have a pretty good overall matchup on our hands here, though. The Pioneers have been scoring pretty well lately, with 70 or more points in five of their last eight games. Sacred Heart is still giving up a lot of points on the other side though, so LIU should have some opportunities in this one. I like this game as a higher-scoring matchup with the Pioneers eking out a cover.
