Duquesne stumbled to a 3-7 start over their first 10 games this year, beating only Rider, Bradley and American. After a three-game win streak in December/January, the Dukes lost three straight to Fordham, Dayton and St. Bonaventure.
In the St. Bonaventure game on Friday, the Dukes were down 33-22 at halftime. Duquesne outscored the Bonnies 34-31 from there but it wasn’t enough in a 64-56 loss. Amir Spears led the team on 18 points, and Tre Williams doubled with 15 points and 11 boards.
Over on the Saint Joseph’s side, their first 12 games featured a 7-5 run with losses to Drexel, Monmouth, USC, Villanova and Bradley. The Hawks have been on a 1-5 skid since, losing to Davidson, Rhode Island, La Salle, VCU and George Mason.
Matched up against George Mason in their last appearance, the Hawks had a 37-33 lead at the break. Saint Joseph’s was outscored 44-34 from there in a 77-71 loss. Erik Reynolds was the top scorer on 18 points, and Taylor Funk added 17 points of his own.
Saint Joseph’s is 5-2 ATS in their last seven at home and 12-30-1 ATS in their last 43 after an ATS win. The Hawks are 6-2 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Dukes are 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four after a straight-up loss. The over is 9-4 in Duquesne’s last 13 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Duquesne, but probably not going near this one. Neither of these teams is playing well lately. That said, Duquesne has hit 71 or more points in three of their last five games. The Dukes do have a good offense in comparable matchups, and I think they’ll fare better in this one. Saint Joseph’s has hit 71 or more points in two of their last three, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a higher-total shootout here. I think Duquesne can keep up.
