Mercer had an unenviable draw in their first matchup of the year, facing off against Arkansas. The Bears had a 36-28 halftime lead but faltered from there in a 74-61 win. Game two against Winthrop went to overtime, but Mercer lost that one as well 88-85.
Mercer finally got into the win column against Life University in their last game. The Bears jumped out to a 43-17 halftime lead and held on for a 78-50 victory. Neftali Alvarez led the way on 17 points with five rebounds.
Over on the St. Louis side, their first three games ended up as victories. The Billikens took out Central Arkansas 96-61 in the opener, then beat Harris-Stowe 127-54 in a blowout. Game three was another win 86-44 over Eastern Illinois.
The Billikens had a rough matchup against a great Memphis team on Tuesday and fell behind early. St. Louis ended up with a 90-74 defeat. Terrence Hargrove topped the team with a double-double on 20 points and 11 boards.
St. Louis is 1-4-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up loss and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Saturday games. The Billikens are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 at home.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 4-1 ATS in their last four road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The under is 15-6 in Mercer’s last 21 Saturday games.
PICK: I’m staying with St. Louis. The Billikens played very well in their first three games, and did a few good things in the Memphis loss as well. St. Louis stayed with it on rebounds (44-48) and assists (12-15) but shot just 31.2 percent from the field.
As for Mercer, it’s been a choppy season already. The Bears do have a few good scorers however, and should find some rhythm down the road. I don’t think they’ll cover here, though.
