The East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the Samford Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from Pete Hanna Center. East Tennessee State is 10-8 so far this season. The Buccaneers lost to Furman in their last game. As for Samford, they’re 11-5 on the year and coming off a loss to Wofford. East Tennessee State posted an 8-5 run over their first 13 games this year, losing to App State, Tennessee, UAB, NC A&T and UNC Asheville. It’s been a 2-3 run for the Buccaneers since then with losses to Chattanooga, Wofford and Furman.
In the Furman game on Wednesday, the Buccaneers had a 39-35 lead at halftime. That edge evaporated with a 43-30 second-half deficit in an eventual 78-69 defeat. ETSU’s Ty Brewer led the way on 15 points and seven rebounds.
Over on the Samford side, they hit a nice 10-2 run out of the gate this year with losses to only San Francisco and Belmont. The Bulldogs have been on a 1-3 skid since, losing to Furman, Mercer and Wofford along the way.
In Wednesday’s Wofford matchup, the Bulldogs were outscored 45-33 in the first half and 42-31 from there in an 87-64 blowout loss. Jaden Campbell came off the bench to lead the scoring on 16 points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Bulldogs are 2-5 ATS in the last seven at home and 5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss. Samford is 4-0 ATS in the last four after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Bucs are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-4 ATS in the last five overall. The over is 7-3 in ETSU’s last 10 road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Samford but probably not touching this one. The Bulldogs posted a bad game against Wofford in their last matchup with just 39.7 percent shooting and 12 turnovers. Samford has given up 81 or more points in each of their last three loses, so it’s been difficult to keep up.
As for East Tennessee State, they’ve got some nice offensive performances in comparable matchups this year but have struggled in others. This one should be a pretty competitive game and realistically I can see it going either way. Should be a fun one to watch.
