The Creighton Bluejays and the San Diego State Aztecs meet Sunday in NCAA Tournament Elite Eight college basketball action from KFC Yum! Center. Creighton is 24-12 on the season and coming off a Sweet 16 win over Princeton. As for San Diego State, they’re 30-6 overall this year. The Aztecs upset Alabama in their Friday tournament matchup. Creighton Bluejays

Creighton managed a 20-11 record over the course of the regular season. The Bluejays would then take out Villanova before a loss to Xavier in the Big East Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, Creighton beat NC State in the First Round and Baylor in the Second.

In the Friday tournament matchup versus Princeton, the Bluejays had a 47-43 edge in the locker room. After a 39-32 second half, Creighton emerged with an 86-75 win. Ryan Kalkbrenner had 22 points and five rebounds, while Baylor Scheierman added 21 points with nine boards.

San Diego State Aztecs

Over on the San Diego State side, they finished off the regular season at 24-6 overall. The Aztecs then beat Colorado State, San Jose State and Utah State in the Mountain West Tournament. So far, San Diego State has taken out Charleston, Furman and Alabama in the national tourney.

On Friday versus Alabama in the Sweet 16 round, the Aztecs went into the second half with a 28-23 edge. San Diego State kept it going with a 43-41 run from there and won 71-64. Leading the way in scoring was Darrion Trammell with 21 points and five rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to take a stab on San Diego State. You could make a case either way, though. The Aztecs posted a 42-16 run across the final 11 minutes of the Alabama game, making the key shots when necessary thanks to a timely offensive effort. It was really the first time San Diego State has been tested in this national tournament, but they were able to hang around with the number-one ranked Tide and eventually take the win. The Aztecs shot a rough 13-of-22 from the line and got out-rebounded 52-48 (20-17 offensive), posting 12 turnovers along the way. As for Creighton, they were able to fend off a scrappy Princeton team in their Friday matchup. The Bluejays have logged 72 or more points in six of their last seven games and they should post a big total here as well. This will be one of the more interesting matchups of this round, and I like an Aztecs cover/win in a competitive game. Should be a fun one to watch.
