The Gonzaga Bulldogs and the San Diego Toreros meet in college basketball action from the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday night.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to build on their 104-72 rout of Portland in their last game. Drew Timme leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 18.1 PPG along with 5.9 RPG while Julian Strawther has 12.5 PPG with 6 RPG and Chet Holmgren’s got 13.9 PPG and a team-high 8.7 RPG as well this season. Rasir Bolton’s also chipping in 10.2 PPG while Andrew Nembhard has 10.2 PPG with a team-high 5.3 APG to lead the Zags in assists. As a team, Gonzaga is averaging 90.8 PPG on 53.5% shooting from the field, 37.8% from three and 70.7% from the foul line while allowing 65.9 PPG on 37.8% shooting from the field and 30% from three this season.
The San Diego Toreros will be out to build on back-to-back wins after a 69-65 road win over Loyola Marymount in their last game. Marcellus Earlington leads the Toreros in scoring with 13.5 PPG and 6.8 RPG while Jase Townsend has 10.7 PPG with 3.1 RPG as the only other Torero to average double digits in scoring so far this season. Joey Calcaterra has 9.3 PPG while Terrell Brown has 9 PPG and a team-high 7.1 RPG and Bryce Monroe has a team-high 2.2 APG as well to lead San Diego in assists this season. As a team, San Diego is averaging 68.1 PPG on 44% shooting from the field, 34.8% from three and 71.5% from the foul line while allowing 63.9 PPG on 41.4% shooting from the field and 29.5% from three this season.
Gonzaga is 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. San Diego is 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 8-0 in their last 8 home games.
I get the case to be made for a home dog like San Diego, but the Gonzaga Bulldogs continue to live up to their reputation of the team that just bullies the rest of the WCC on the way to the NCAA tournament. Now one could argue that we haven’t necessarily seen much of the Zags on the road, but the one time we did, the Zags beat a pretty good Santa Clara team by 32 points. Not sure that happens here, but banking that it does is a lot better than relying on San Diego to get us a cover. Give me Gonzaga here.
