Rutgers hit a three-game win streak to open up the season, then dropped three in a row to DePaul, Lafayette and UMass. The Scarlet Knights would then beat Clemson, lose in a blowout to Illinois and eke by Purdue in a great Thursday win.
In the Boilermakers matchup, the Knights posted a 36-35 edge in the first half and a 34-33 run from there in a 70-68 victory. Ron Harper was the top performer with 30 points, 10 rebounds and one assist in 38 minutes of work.
Over on the Seton Hall side, they hit a 3-0 run to start the year as well before losing by three to Ohio State. Since then the Pirates have won five straight over California, Bethune-Cookman, Wagner, Nyack and Texas.
On Thursday in the Texas game, the Pirates turned a 37-37 halftime tie into a 64-60 win with 27 second-half points. Jared Rhoden led the way on 18 points, and Alexis Yetna doubled up on 12 points and 11 boards.
The Pirates are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games and the under is 4-1 in their last five after an ATS win. The under is 6-0-1 in Seton Hall’s last seven versus a team with a winning straight-up record.
Meanwhile, the Knights are 2-6-1 ATS in the last nine overall and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six Sunday games. The over is 5-2 in Rutgers’ last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Rutgers here. This is a tough one to pick however, as both teams are coming off big wins. The Pirates shot 40.4 percent in the Texas matchup, with 38 rebounds and nine turnovers. The Longhorns were just 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range, so that certainly helped in the win. Overall Seton Hall has looked pretty good in every game, and they’ve been competitive with everyone that steps on the court.
As for Rutgers, they had an ugly outing versus Illinois but made up for it in the Purdue win. The Knights shot 52.1 percent in that one with 7-of-14 from 3-point range and 18 assists. I don’t think lightning will strike twice in this one, but it’s sure to be a great matchup. I think the line is thick enough for Rutgers to get in there.
