The Clemson Tigers and the SMU Mustangs meet Saturday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. Here’s an SMU vs Clemson prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best SMU vs Clemson pick.

Clemson Tigers Betting Preview

The Tigers have been on a steady run all year. They’ve got just one instance of consecutive losses so far. Clemson kicked things off with a 9-3 stretch over the first 12 outings, dispatching Charleston Southern, St Francis PA, Eastern Kentucky, Radford, San Francisco, Penn State, Florida A&M, Kentucky and Miami in that time. Since then it’s been a solid 12-2 run over the last 14 games with losses to only Louisville and Georgia Tech. Otherwise the wins have come courtesy of Wake Forest, Stanford, Cal, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, NC State, Duke, North Carolina and Florida State in succession. That gives Clemson a 21-5 overall record through 26 games so far this season.

In their matchup with Florida State on the road last weekend, the Tigers were in firm control with a 36-19 advantage by the break. Clemson kept it going in the second half with a 36-27 run and took the win in blowout fashion 72-46 in the end. Tops in scoring was Dillon Hunter with 17 points, four assists and one steal. Ian Schieffelin managed a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Chauncey Wiggins added 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes of work off the bench during the victory.

SMU Mustangs Betting Preview

Over on the SMU side, they’ve been quite the consistent team so far this year as well, with only a handful of scattered losses. The Mustangs opened with a 4-2 run featuring losses to Butler and Mississippi State. SMU would take out Cal Baptist, Washington State, Alabama State, Virginia, LSU, Boston College and Longwood before losses to Duke and North Carolina. The next 10 games were an 8-2 run with losses to only Louisville and Wake Forest. The wins otherwise in that time came versus Georgia Tech, Virginia, Miami, NC State, Cal, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh. That would give SMU a 19-6 record through 25 games.

Matched up against Notre Dame on Wednesday, the Mustangs had a pretty smooth game. SMU was up 50-25 by halftime and cruised the rest of the way toward a 97-73 blowout finish. Leading the scoring was Kario Oquendo with 25 points, two assists and one rebound. Both Matt Cross (nine rebounds; three steals) and Same Yigitoglu (six rebounds; two steals) each had 14 points as well.

Why the SMU Mustangs will win

  • SMU has lost each of its last nine games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • Clemson has won the first half in each of its last nine games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Total Points Facts

  • Each of SMU’s last four home games against Conference opponents have produced a total of 146 or fewer points.

SMU vs Clemson Prediction

I’ll lean toward Clemson here, but you could call it either way. The Tigers didn’t have any issues on the road versus a decent Florida State team in their last outing, shooting a smooth 47.5 percent from the field with just 34 percent allowed on the other side. Clemson owned the boards with a 41-33 advantage and scored 16 points off 14 Seminoles turnovers. It was a pretty well-rounded victory overall. That makes three straight wins since the Tigers’ triple-overtime home loss to Georgia Tech on February 4. Clemson has hit 72 or more points in all three of those games.

As for SMU, on Wednesday they blew right past a middling Notre Dame team in a road win. The Mustangs shot a nice 58.6 percent from the field in that one with a 43-20 rebounding advantage (13-6 offensive). On the other side SMU held the Irish to just 41.8 percent shooting. That gives the Mustangs a 6-1 run in the last seven games, with the lone defeat being a 77-66 affair versus Wake Forest. Clemson should be a stout matchup, and it’ll be interesting to see what SMU can do on Saturday.
