The Evansville Purple Aces and the SMU Mustangs meet Tuesday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. Evansville sits at 4-8 so far this year. the Aces are coming off a close loss to Southeast Missouri State. As for SMU, they’re 9-3 on the season and fresh off a win over New Mexico. Evansville went 2-2 over their first four games this year, then hit a losing streak to UCF, Rice, Vermont and Akron. Since then it’s been another 2-2 run with wins over Eastern IL and Tennessee Tech mixed with losses to Southern IL and SEMO.
In the matchup versus Southeast Missouri State, the Aces were down by just two points at halftime but ultimately couldn’t overcome the Redhawks in a 75-73 loss. Noah Frederking, Shamar Givance and Jawaun Newton each scored 15 points.
Over on the SMU side, they went 3-3 over their first six games this year, recording losses to Oregon, Missouri and LMU along the way. SMU has since won six straight versus Sam Houston, LA-Monroe, UNLV, Vanderbilt, Dayton and New Mexico.
In Sunday’s game versus New Mexico, the Mustangs posted 46 points in the first half and 44 more from there in a 90-72 win. Kendric Davis led the team on 33 points with five rebounds, and Marcus Weathers added 13 points with seven boards.
The Mustangs are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 at home and 2-5 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games. SMU is 4-0 ATS in their last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Aces are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games versus a team with a winning home record. The over is 10-4-1 in Evansville’s last 15 at home.
PICK: I’m going to stick with SMU. The Mustangs put up a good effort in their last outing, with 50 percent shooting from the field and a 48-32 rebounding advantage. The SMU offense has really been clicking this year; they’ve put up 70 or more points in 11 of 12 games so far.
As for the Aces, they’ve had a few flashes here and there but haven’t quite been able to finish in a handful of games so far. I think Evansville will hang around in the first half here before the Mustangs pull away on a cover.
