The New Mexico Lobos and the SMU Mustangs meet Tuesday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. New Mexico is 2-0 on the season and took out South Alabama in their last game Friday. As for the Mustangs, they’re currently 1-1 following a loss to Dayton. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
New Mexico opened up the year with a matchup versus Southern Utah. The Lobos scored 50 points in the second half and powered out a win 89-81. Jamal Mashburn Jr. put up 24 points to lead the way, and Jaelen House added 23 points with seven assists.
Game two against South Alabama was another victory for the Lobos. New Mexico had a slim one-point advantage by the break but turned it into an 80-74 win. Both House and Morris Udeze posted 21 points each, combining for nine rebounds and nine assists.
Over on the SMU side, they tangled with Texas A&M-Commerce in their first game of the season. The Mustangs posted a 46-33 advantage in the second half to take a 77-60 win. Zhuric Phelps was the high man on the team with 28 points and five boards.
The Mustangs got an unenviable draw in their second game as they took on Dayton. SMU was down 29-24 by halftime and ended up with a 74-62 defeat. Zach Nutall led the team on 20 points, while Samuell Williamson posted 14 points and nine rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to stay with New Mexico. The Lobos have a couple of solid wins in the books thus far, and they’re getting quality contributions from a handful of names on the roster—specifically House, Udeze, Mashburn Jr. and Josiah Allick. It’s a small sample size but New Mexico has hit 80 points in both games so far.
As for SMU, they hung around with Dayton for a while in their last game but ultimately couldn’t hold the pace. I think this matchup will be similar, with the Mustangs fading late as New Mexico takes the cover.
