The Oklahoma State Cowboys and the SMU Mustangs meet Sunday in NIT college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. Here’s an SMU vs Oklahoma State prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best SMU vs Oklahoma State pick.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview
The Cowboys started out on a pretty nice run this year but things started getting choppy during a tricky conference schedule. Oklahoma State kicked things off at 8-3, then took losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Texas Tech and Kansas State int he next nine games. The Cowboys would beat Utah, Arizona State, UCF, Iowa State and Cincinnati during the remainder of the regular season with losses otherwise to Houston, TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas, Baylor and UCF. After a conference tournament loss to Cincinnati, the Cowboys would bounce back with an NIT First Round victory over Wichita State. That gives Oklahoma State a 16-17 overall record though 33 games so far this season.
In the Wichita State matchup back on Tuesday, the Cowboys were looking up at a 40-35 edge on the scoreboard by halftime. Oklahoma State hit a 49-44 run the rest of the way and powered out the 89-79 win in the end. Tops in scoring was Bryce Thompson with 23 points, four rebounds, five steals and two assists. Abou Ousmane added 13 points with five rebounds, while Jamyron Keller had 12 points with three boards. Tops off the bench were Khalil Brantley (12 points; five rebounds; four assists) and Brandon Newman (10 points; 12 rebounds; one assist) in the winning effort.
SMU Mustangs Betting Preview
Over on the SMU side, they were looking pretty good in the record column by mid-February but hit some trouble the rest of the way. The Mustangs kicked things off on a nice 11-2 run with losses to only Butler and Mississippi State, then lost to Duke and North Carolina in early January. Wins over Georgia Tech, Virginia, Miami, NC State, Cal, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Pitt came in the next nine, then losses to Wake Forest, Clemson, Stanford and Florida State in the next seven outings. After a win over Syracuse in the conference tourney, SMU lost to Clemson before their NIT First Round victory versus Northern Iowa this week. In total the Mustangs have a 24-10 record through 34 games so far.
Matched up against Northern Iowa on Wednesday, the Mustangs held a slim 33-32 edge going into the second half. SMU hit a 40-31 run the rest of the way in a 73-63 victory. Topping the scorers was BJ Edwards on a double-double with 16 points, 10 boards, seven assists and four steals. Both Kario Oquendo (seven rebounds) and Chuck Harris (four rebounds; five assists) notched 12 points apiece, while Yohan Traore added 11 points and four boards off the bench.

SMU vs Oklahoma State Prediction
I’ll try Oklahoma State in this one, but you could call it either way. The Cowboys put away a decent Wichita State team this week thanks to 44.3 percent shooting from the field, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from outside, 46 rebounds and just eight turnovers. Oklahoma State gave up only 40.8 percent on the other side, but weren’t spectacular from the line (18-of-26) themselves. Still, it was a nice bounce-back effort after a fairly listless loss to Cincinnati in conference tournament action this week. The Cowboys have scored 68 or more points in three straight games now, and they’ll likely have to keep that going on Sunday.
As for SMU, they did okay against a sneaky-good Northern Iowa team in their last game, notching 44.4 percent from the field with a 44-30 rebounding edge. The 12 turnovers and 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the line could stand to be cleaned up, though. The Mustangs have been below 70 points in each of their last five losses, so it’ll be important for them to step on the gas offensively here as well. Should be a high total and a fun game to watch.
