The Temple Owls and the SMU Mustangs meet Saturday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum. Temple is 11-6 on the year so far. The Owls beat Cincinnati in their last game. Temple got off to a sketchy 7-6 start this year, taking losses to USC, Clemson, Boise State, Saint Joseph’s, UCF and Houston. The Owls have since won four straight versus UCF, East Carolina, Tulsa and Cincinnati.
In the Bearcats matchup on Tuesday, the Owls were down 37-25 at halftime. Temple surged on a 36-21 run from there and powered out the 61-58 comeback victory. Damian Dunn was the team’s top scorer with 18 points and six rebounds.
Over on the SMU side, they started at 3-3 this year with losses to Oregon, Missouri and LMU. The Mustangs are on a 12-1 run since then (with a loss to Cincinnati). SMU has taken out South Florida, Tulane, Memphis and South Florida again in their last quartet.
Matched up against South Florida on Wednesday, the Mustangs didn’t have a ton of trouble. SMU scored 36 points in the first half and 38 more in the second for a 74-54 win. Marcus Weathers was the high man on 17 points and four boards.
The Mustangs are 4-1 ATS in their last five at home and 7-1 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win. SMU is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. Temple is 6-2 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m going to stick with SMU in this one. The Mustangs are looking good over this 11-1 run and scoring well. They’ve hit 70 or more points in each of their wins in that span and don’t normally have a lot of trouble on offense. As for Temple, they’ve been below 70 points in four of their last five outings but they’re still 4-1 in that stretch. The Owls are going to have to get it going on the scoreboard early here, and I don’t think they’ll be able to keep up for the whole game.
