Samford hit a six-game win streak over Anderson (SC), Spring Hill, Belhaven, Alabama A&M, TX Southern and Valparaiso to start the year. The last five have all been losses to LA Tech, UT Southern, DePaul, UCF and Louisiana, however.
Last weekend versus Louisiana, the Bulldogs trailed 37-32 by halftime. Samford was outscored 38-26 from there in a 75-58 loss. Jaden Campbell posted 12 points to lead the team, and Jaron Rillie added 11 points with four assists.
Over on the South Carolina State side, they have a lone win over East Carolina this year. Otherwise it’s been losses to South Carolina, Tennessee State, Duquesne, Kentucky, North Florida, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky, Furman, Winthrop, USC Upstate and UNC Asheville.
In the UNC Asheville game, SC State was down 47-32 at halftime. South Carolina State got better from there with 52 second-half points but still lost 94-84. Davion Everett doubled up in the loss with 10 points and 12 boards.
PICK: I’m going to stick with SC State. Probably not touching this one, though. The Bulldogs had a decent second half against UNC Asheville in garbage time and they’ve struggled wildly all season long. The good news is that SC State has still been putting up reasonable points totals even if their record is shot. As for Samford, they’re on a five-game losing streak but had been very competitive until last weekend’s 17-point loss. This ought to be a fairly decent matchup, and I think SC State can keep pace if they play well.
