The Clemson Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks meet Friday in college basketball action from Colonial Life Arena. Clemson is 1-0 so far this year following an 11-point win over the Citadel in their opener. As for South Carolina, they’re 1-0 as well after a close victory versus South Carolina State. Clemson had a pretty average campaign last season, going 17-16 overall with an 8-12 record in ACC play. The Tigers finished ahead of Louisville, Boston College, Pitt, Georgia Tech and NC State in the standings, ultimately falling to Virginia Tech in the conference tourney.

In their first action of the season back on Monday, the Tigers took on the Citadel. Clemson had a 14-point lead by the break and held on for the 80-69 win. Chase Hunter scored 23 points, and Hunter Tyson doubled up with 19 points and 13 boards. Ian Schieffelin added 20 points and 14 rebounds as well.

Over on the South Carolina side, they had a pretty mediocre 2021-22 season as well. The Gamecocks were 18-13 overall with a 9-9 SEC record. South Carolina finished around the middle of the standings and lost to Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament.

South Carolina had a close call in their first matchup of the year versus South Carolina State. The Gamecocks had a 3-point advantage at the break and held it for an 80-77 win. Tops in scoring was Hayden Brown with 21 points. Gregory Jackson added 18 points and 10 boards.

PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Clemson. The Tigers outmatched the Citadel in their first action of the year back on Monday, posting 46.2 percent from the field with 42 rebounds and 19 assists. Clemson wasn’t great from the line (72.2 percent) or 3-point land (31.8 percent) however. As for South Carolina, they posted a gutsy win against a pesky SC State squad, shooting 44.1 percent with 40 rebounds along the way. Clemson will provide a nice test for the Gamecocks, and I’m not sure they can cover.
