Southern Mississippi vs Troy 12/29/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Troy Trojans and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet Thursday in college basketball action from Reed Green Coliseum. Troy is 8-5 overall this year and coming off a loss to Mercer. Troy went 5-1 over their first six games this year, losing to only St. Thomas MN. The Trojans have hit a 3-4 run since then however, falling to Arkansas, SIU-Edwardsville, San Diego State and Mercer in that stretch. 

In the Mercer game last Wednesday, the Trojans were down 41-32 going into halftime. Troy made a valiant comeback in the second but ended up falling 82-79. Zay Williams was tops in scoring with 20 points and nine rebounds. 

Over on the Southern Miss side, they’ve lost to only Northwestern State and UNLV this year. The wins have come versus William Carey, Vanderbilt, Loyola, Liberty, Winthrop, Fort Wayne, Mobile, Montana, Lamar (twice) and McNeese State. 

Last Thursday versus UNLV, the Eagles entered the second half with a 33-32 edge. Southern Miss fell behind from there on a 42-30 run and lost 74-63. DeAndre Pinckney doubled with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Austin Crowley added 18 points. 

PICK: I’ll probably stick with Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles had a bad second half in their last game versus a great UNLV team, but overall they’ve had a great season. Southern Miss has hit 70 or more points in 10 of their 13 games thus far, and should post a nice total in this one as well. As for Troy, they’ve hit 77 or more points in three of their last four games so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a high total here. Southern Miss should be in control cover-wise, though.
