Northern Arizona managed a 4-9 run in their first 13 games this year, beating Benedictine AZ, CSUB, UTRGV and Idaho State in that time. The last six games have been a 3-3 stretch with losses to Montana State, Montana and Portland State.
In the Portland State matchup, the Lumberjacks coughed up 52 points in the first half and 45 in the second during a 97-76 blowout loss. Leading the scoring was Jalen Cone on 19 points, and Nik Mains added 14 points with five boards in the defeat.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they hit a 9-5 stretch to begin the year, then took a 16-day postponement break as the calendar turned to 2022. The Thunderbirds are 3-1 since then with victories over Portland State, Idaho State, and Portland State again.
In the Thursday rematch versus Portland State, the Thunderbirds had a comfortable 38-26 lead at the break but ended up surrendering 51 second-half points. Southern Utah needed overtime to bag the 85-82 win. Tevian Jones led the team in the victory with 36 points and 10 boards.
The Thunderbirds are 0-5 ATS in their last five at home and 0-6 ATS in the last six overall. Southern Utah is 5-16 ATS in their last 21 Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five after an ATS loss. The under is 9-4 in Northern AZ’s last 13 Monday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Southern Utah here; the line is a little thick, though. Since returning from the postponement pause at the beginning of the year, the Thunderbirds have looked pretty good. They’ve hit 84 or more points in all four games and have just the one 92-84 loss to Weber State mixed in there. As for Northern Arizona, they’ve scored pretty well over their last six games, but they’re also giving up some big points totals to decent offensive teams. I think Southern Utah is good enough to take advantage of that and cover in this one.
