Sacramento State went on a 3-2 run to start the year, then lost to Arizona, Montana and Montana State in succession over the next three. The Hornets bounced back with a win over Menlo in their last outing.
In the December 17 matchup versus Menlo, the Hornets scored 36 points in the first half and 31 more from there in a 67-53 win. Leading the scoring was Zach Chappell with 15 points. William FitzPatrick added 12 points as well.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they started out a spotty 1-3 before hitting a win streak over Yale, Bowling Green, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Utah Valley and St. Katherine. The Thunderbirds then lost to Michigan and beat Dixie State.
In the Dixie State game, the Thunderbirds jumped out to a 50-17 lead at the break and cruised from there in an 87-59 win. Tevian Jones posted 18 points, and Maizen Fausett doubled up with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern UT is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 at home and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. The Thunderbirds are 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 0-4 ATS in the last four Thursday games and 0-5 ATS in the last five after a straight-up win. The over is 6-1 in Sac State’s last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Southern Utah. Outside of the Michigan game, the Thunderbirds have been on a great run over their last eight matchups. In that span Southern Utah has hit 81 or more points in six games, so it’s been a solid offensive output lately.
As for Sacramento State, they’ve had a few good scoring outings this year but I don’t think they’ve got the legs to keep up on a cover—especially if Southern Utah gets going early.
