Southern vs Texas Southern 1/3/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Texas Southern Tigers and the Southern Jaguars meet in college basketball action from E.G. Clark Activity Center on Monday night.

The Texas Southern Tigers come into this one on the heels of back-to-back wins after a 70-60 win over UTRGV last time out. John Walker III leads the Tigers in scoring with 12.6 PPG along with 5.4 RPG while PJ Henry has 10.6 PPG with 2.2 APG and Joirdon Karl Nicholas also has 11 PPG with 5.4 RPG to make up the trio of double-digit scorers for Texas Southern up to this point in the season. Brison Gresham also has 8.8 RPG as well for the Tigers this season. As a team, Texas Southern is averaging 62.9 PPG on 41.2% shooting from the field, 27.1% from three and 66.7% from the foul line while allowing 70 PPG on 42% shooting from the field and 28.3% from three this season.

The Southern Jaguars will look to bounce back from a 69-60 loss to Dayton last time out. Tyrone Lyons leads the Jaguars in scoring with 14.6 PPG along with 4.5 RPG while Brion Whitley has 12.5 PPG and Jayden Saddler has 10.5 PPG with a team-high 4.2 APG to lead the Jaguars in the assist department and to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for Southern up to this point in the season. Terrell Williams also has 9.4 PPG while Damien Sears leads the Jaguars on the glass with 5.5 RPG as well this season. As a team, Southern is averaging 72 PPG on 44% shooting from the field, 37.3% from three and 67.8% from the foul line while allowing 72.5 PPG on 47.9% shooting from the field and 30.6% from three this season.

Texas Southern is 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games following a win and 10-1 ATS in their last 11 road games against a team with a winning home record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 Monday games. Southern is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record.

Both of these two teams have played some stiff competition and it’s Texas Southern that has the memorable win over Florida, but I’m not sure why they’re favored here. The home team’s won the last 4 meetings between the two sides and while Texas Southern’s battle-tested, Southern’s been winning the games against teams on their level, especially at home. Texas Southern’s also had a three-week layoff coming into this game and  I just think this is a spot where the Jaguars get the job done, so give me Southern at home here.
