Loyola Marymount posted a 7-5 run over their first dozen games this year. The Lions have gone just 2-6 since then, however. The losses in that time have been versus San Francisco, San Diego, Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga, San Diego and Santa Clara.
Matched up against Santa Clara on Thursday, the Lions were down by four at halftime. LMU was outscored 29-44 from there in a 79-60 loss. Both Keli Leaupepe and Joe Quintana put up 14 points apiece, combining for seven rebounds as well.
Over on the Saint Mary’s side, they hit a 12-4 stretch to start the year, falling to Wisconsin, Colorado State, San Diego State and BYU. The Gaels have managed a six-game win streak since then. They took out Portland in their last appearance.
In the Thursday game versus Portland, the Gaels posted 34 points in the first half and 41 more in the second during a 75-54 win. Logan Johnson topped the team on 17 points, and Matthias Tass posted 12 points with three rebounds.
The Gaels are 6-0 ATS in their last six at home and 5-0 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. St. Mary’s is 6-0 ATS in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Lions are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four road games. LMU is 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
PICK: I’ve got to stay with Saint Mary’s here. The line is probably too thick to mess with, though. The Gaels are on an impressive run over this six-game win streak. They’ve hit 72 or more points in each one of those games, and held opponents to 65 or fewer points in five of them. LMU hasn’t seen more than 65 points in any of their last four games, so that’s not good news for the Lions. Saint Mary’s should be in full control here and I like them to post another convincing victory.
