The Prairie View A&M Panthers and the Saint Mary’s Gaels meet Tuesday in college basketball action from University Credit Union Pavilion. Prairie View managed to go 16-5 overall last year and snagged a regular season co-championship in the SWAC. As for the Gaels, they put up a 14-10 record last season and earned an invite to the NIT. Prairie View A&M logged a 16-5 overall record in the 2020-21 season, also finishing a nifty 13-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Panthers ended up sharing the regular-season conference title with Jackson State, who went 11-0 in the SWAC and 12-6 overall.
Prairie View went just 1-4 in non-conference play last year but didn’t lose a game for over two months once the SWAC games began. The Panthers took out MS Valley State and Grambling State in the conference tournament, but ultimately lost to Texas Southern in the title game.
Over on the Saint Mary’s side, they were 14-10 last year with a 4-6 West Coast Conference finish. The Gaels ended up just three spots out of the basement in the standings, ahead of only San Francisco, San Diego and Portland.
The Gaels stumbled into the WCC Tournament but did manage to get a Quarterfinals win over Loyola Marymount 52-47. St. Mary’s ended up falling to Gonzaga in the semis. After an invite to the NIT, the Gaels couldn’t get past Western Kentucky in the First Round, losing 69-67.
PICK: I’m likely sticking with Saint Mary’s. The Gaels certainly had an uphill battle last year with an inexperienced roster and a choppy schedule due to cancellations, but still managed to put together a winning record and an NIT bid. The good news for Saint Mary’s is that they’re getting nearly the entire team back this year and have no transfers. The chemistry should be right there from the very beginning. I think the Gaels will put together an improved season, starting with a solid showing in this matchup.
