The Pacific Tigers and the Stanford Cardinal meet in college basketball action from the Maples Pavilion on Monday night.
The Pacific Tigers will try to bounce back from a horrendous 2021-22 season, finishing at 6-22 overall, including 3-11 in West Coast Conference play, earning the 9-seed in the conference tournament. The Tigers were quickly eliminated by Loyola Marymount in the first round of the tournament, ending their season as a result. The Tigers do have to replace some of their best players from last year, including a pair of double-digit scorers in Alphonso Anderson (12.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG) and Jeremiah Bailey (11.3 PPG, 6 RPG) as well as top assist man Pierre Crockrell (6.7 PPG, 4.3 APG). The Tigers did fill some gaps with transfers like Jordan Ivy-Curry from UTSA (13.9 PPG last season) to go along with the returning Luke Avdalovic (10 PPG) and Nick Blake (8.8 PPG).
The Stanford Cardinal will try to bounce back after a frustrating 2021-22 season, finishing the year at 16-16 overall, including an 8-12 mark in Pac-12 conference play. The Cardinal upended Arizona State in the first round as the 9-seed in the Pac-12 tournament before being eliminated in a close loss to top-seeded Arizona in the quarterfinals. The Cardinal do lose one of their better players in Jaiden Delaire 10.1 PPG, 4 RPG last season), but return a pair of double-digit scorers in Spencer Jones (12 PPG, 4.5 RPG) and Harrison Ingram (10.5 PPG, team-high 6.7 RPG) while also bringing in Michael Jones as a nice get from Davidson (11.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG). The Cardinal do have a deep roster to build around those guys and if the cards fall in the right places, Stanford could make a run to a potential at-large bid, but only time will tell if that’s actually the case.
Pacific is 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 road games and 5-22-1 ATS in their last 28 games overall while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Stanford is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Monday games.
I get the case to be made either way in this game, but I’m going to lean towards Stanford here. I just don’t trust Pacific early on and while Stanford isn’t going to be a world-beater, they do return a lot of their top-end talent from last year’s squad and I just think they’re in the better position coming into this game. Give me the Cardinal here.
