The Syracuse Orange and the Stanford Cardinal meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Maple Pavilion. Here’s a Stanford vs Syracuse prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Stanford vs Syracuse pick.

Syracuse Orange Betting Preview

The Orange have had a couple of pretty good runs going this year, but overall it’s been a struggle. Syracuse hasn’t been above .500 in quite some time, though they’re not too far off from that mark. The Orange beat Le Moyne, Colgate, and Youngstown State in their first three outings, then fell to Texas, Texas Tech, Tennessee, and Notre Dame (with a win over Cornell) in the next five. A 2-4 stretch came next with wins over Albany and Bucknell alongside losses to Georgetown, Maryland, Wake Forest, and Florida State in that time. Since then it’s been a 3-3 run with wins over Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Notre Dame mixed with losses to Louisville, Clemson, and Pittsburgh, giving the Orange a 9-11 overall run through 20 games.

In the Saturday matchup with Pittsburgh, Syracuse held a 33-32 edge at the break. The Orange slipped in the second half however, getting outscored 45-40 on the way to a 77-73 defeat. Tops in scoring was JJ Starling with 16 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Eddie Lampkin doubled up on 10 points with a whopping 23 rebounds and three assists, while Lucas Taylor chipped in 12 points with seven boards. Chris Bell scored 12 points off the bench as well.

Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview

Over on the Stanford side, they’ve had a couple instances of sketchy play this year but on the whole, the Cardinal are doing pretty well, all things considered. Stanford took out Denver, Cal State Fullerton, Northern Arizona, UC Davis, Norfolk State, and Santa Clara in their first six outings, then fell to Grand Canyon and Cal Poly in the next pair. Three wins came next over Utah Valley, California, and Merrimack, followed by three losses to Oregon, Clemson, and Pittsburgh. Since then the Cardinal have recovered with a 5-1 stretch. The lone loss in that time came versus Wake Forest. Otherwise, it’s been wins over Virginia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina, Miami, and Florida State in that time, giving Stanford a 14-6 overall record so far this year.

Matched up against Florida State on Saturday, the Cardinal came out of the locker room sporting a 33-25 advantage. Stanford kept the pace pretty well from there on a 46-45 run and ended up taking the win 78-71 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Oziyah Sellers with 27 points, two rebounds and two assists. Jaylen Blakes added 13 points with three rebounds and three assists, while Maxime Raynaud had eight points with 14 boards and two assists.

Why the Stanford Cardinal will win

  • Stanford has won 12 of its last 13 games at Maples Pavilion.
  • Syracuse has lost five of its last six night games against the Atlantic Coast Conference.
  • Stanford has won the first half in 12 of its last 13 games at Maples Pavilion against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Stanford vs Syracuse Prediction

I’m staying with Stanford. The Cardinal powered past a decent Florida State team in their last outing thanks to 47.3 percent shooting. Stanford got outmuscled on the boards 35-33 in that one but also held the Seminoles to just 37.9 percent shooting in a solid defensive display. It was a sloppy game overall though (27 total turnovers) with the Cardinal committing 14 turnovers for 14 FSU points. During this 5-1 stretch, Stanford has hit 70 or more points in all five victories, so if they can get to that threshold on Wednesday they’ll be in good shape.

As for Syracuse, they did a great job on the boards against Pitt, posting a 48-31 advantage. The Orange didn’t shoot terribly well though (40.3 percent) and had 11 turnovers during the four-point home loss. Syracuse has scored well over the last three games with 72 or more points in each. That said, the Orange have given up a combined 163 points in their last two outings (both losses), so Stanford should have plenty of room to score in this one.
