The Jackson State Tigers and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks meet Thursday in college basketball action from William R. Johnson Coliseum. Jackson State is fresh off a Tuesday matchup versus Alabama. In that one the Tigers fell in a blowout. As for Stephen F. Austin, they’re 7-5 overall this year and coming off a win over North American. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Jackson State went 0-6 to kick off the year, then finally got a win over SMU on December 3. The Tigers would then hit another losing streak, falling to TCU, Akron, Mississippi State and Texas Tech over the next four games.
On Tuesday versus Alabama, the Tigers had a good first half and trailed by just one point at the break. Jackson State was drilled 51-32 from there however, and lost 84-64. Ken Evans was the only team double-digit scorer with 19 points and five rebounds.
Over on the Stephen F. Austin side, they went 3-3 over their first six games this year, falling to Alcorn State, Quinnipiac and Middle Tennessee. The Lumberjacks are 4-2 since then with losses to only Northwestern State and Furman.
On Monday versus North American, Stephen F. Austin was up 47-16 by halftime. The Lumberjacks hit cruise control from there and won 83-51. Sadaidriene Hall led the way on 18 points and four rebounds.
PICK: I’ll probably stay with Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks are on a nice run over their last six games, and they’ve been competitive even in their losses. SFA has hit 70 or more points in all six of those outings, going 4-2 in the record column.
As for Jackson State, they’ve faced some major adversity this year and have been beaten up by some top-shelf national teams lately. Stephen F. Austin isn’t on the level of TCU or Mississippi State but I still think the Lumberjacks bag a cover here.
