The South Dakota State Jackrabbits and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks meet Sunday in college basketball action from William R. Johnson Coliseum. South Dakota State has a 1-1 record so far, taking out Bradley and falling to Alabama. As for Stephen F. Austin, they’ve won both their games this year versus LSU-Alexandria and Mary Hardin-Baylor. South Dakota State held Bradley to just 26 points in the first half of their opener. The Jackrabbits would go on to post an 81-65 victory. Doug Wilson (20 points; 10 rebounds) and Baylor Scheierman (10 points; 14 rebounds) each doubled up in that one.
In game two against Alabama, the Jackrabbits were within three at the break (41-38) but ran out of gas in the second half during a 104-88 loss. Noah Freidel led the team on 23 points, and Scheierman doubled up again with 10 points, 18 boards and six assists.
Over on the Stephen F. Austin side, they had a relatively slim 38-34 lead on LSU-Alexandria in their opener but pulled away in the second half for an 82-73 win. Gavin Kensmil led the team with a double-double, posting 24 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.
Game two was a little easier for the Lumberjacks, thanks to a 44-22 halftime edge against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Stephen F. Austin would secure a 76-63 win, thanks in part to leading scorer David Kachelries and his 13 points, three assists and four rebounds.
Stephen F. Austin is 1-6 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win and 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven as an underdog. The under is 4-1 in the Lumberjacks’ last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Jackrabbits are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 road games and 14-6 ATS in their last 20 Sunday games. The over is 4-1 in South Dakota State’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to try South Dakota State here. The Jackrabbits put together a valiant initial effort against Alabama in their last game, but simply didn’t have the firepower to keep up. South Dakota state gave up 63 second-half points and were out-rebounded 47-38 by a superior team, but still shot 48.6 percent with 15 team assists.
As for Stephen F. Austin, this will be their toughest game so far after two relative cupcake matchups. All things considered, I think the Jackrabbits can bang out a cover if they play well.
