The UMBC Retrievers and the Stony Brook Seawolves meet Monday in college basketball action from USB Sports Complex. UMBC is 6-8 on the year and coming off a loss to Vermont. UMBC got off to a pretty good 5-2 start this year with losses to only UMass and Longwood. Since then it’s been a 1-6 run however. The Retrievers have lost to Delaware, Georgetown, Princeton, UNCG, UMass Lowell and Vermont in that time.
Matched up against Vermont on Saturday, UMBC trailed 50-33 going into halftime. The Retrievers kept the pace from there but still lost 86-69. Leading scorer Szymon Wojcik put up 22 points with six rebounds in 17 minutes of work.
Over on the Stony Brook side, they stumbled to a 3-4 start over their first seven games. The Seawolves have gotten their bearings since then though, with a 6-2 run. The losses in that time were to Florida and Vermont.
Back on January 12 versus Vermont, the Seawolves posted a 53-39 deficit in the first half and trailed 45-26 from there in a 98-65 blowout loss. Anthony Roberts and Tykei Greene each scored 13 points, combining for five rebounds as well.
The Seawolves are 7-16 ATS in their last 23 at home and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. The over is 5-1 in Stony Brook’s last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Retrievers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall. The under is 18-8 in UMBC’s last 26 road games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Stony Brook here. The Seawolves have played just two games this calendar year so far however, so it’s tough knowing what they’ll look like. That said, Stony Brook has scored well over this 6-2 run, hitting 79 or more points in five of those eight games. As for UMBC, they’ve been a little spotty on offense lately but they can certainly score when the matchup is right. I think this one will be a fairly high total with Stony Brook powering out a cover.
