The Lamar Cardinals and the Tarleton State Texans meet Saturday in college basketball action from Wisdom Gymnasium. Lamar is just 2-24 so far this year and coming off a loss to Abilene Christian. Lamar managed a win over Wiley in their opener and another over Our Lady of the Lake in early December, but outside of that it’s been a futile run this year. The Cardinals have lost their last three games to Seattle, Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian.
In the Thursday matchup versus Abilene Christian, the Cardinals scored just 20 points in the first half. Lamar was outscored 22-34 from there in a 77-42 defeat. The only team player in double-figures was Corey Nickerson with 11 points and seven boards.
Over on the Tarleton side, they’ve had some bright spots and some spotty runs so far this year; it’s been a mixed bag. The Texans are 5-2 in their last seven however, with wins over Lamar, UTRGV (twice) and Chicago State (twice) in that time.
Matched up against UTRGV on Thursday, the Texans jumped out to a 42-22 lead by the break. Tarleton was outscored 33-40 from there but hung on for the 75-62 win. Montre Gipson was the lead scorer with 22 points and three assists.
The Texans are 1-5 ATS in their last six at home and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 overall. The over is 10-4-1 in Tarleton’s last 15 overall.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 8-21 ATS in their last 29 road games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Lamar is 7-18-1 ATS in the last 26 Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Tarleton. This probably isn’t one to mess with, though. The Texans have found some success lately against Chicago State, UTRGV and Lamar over this 5-2 run. Tarleton has scored 75 or more points in three of those five victories, not including the 62-57 road win over Lamar on January 26 the last time these teams met up. The Texans should be fine on a cover effort here, but given the circumstances of both teams’ recent performances it’s probably best to stay away.
