The UTRGV Vaqueros and the Tarleton State Texans meet Thursday in college basketball action from Wisdom Gymnasium. UTRGV is currently 7-20 on the year so far. The Vaqueros lost to Sam Houston in their last game. As for Tarleton State, they’re 12-15 and coming off a win over Chicago State. UTRGV started out the year on a 4-2 run, but they haven’t been able to win consecutive games since. The Vaqueros are currently on a five-game losing streak, falling to Abilene Christian, Seattle, Cal Baptist, Seattle and Sam Houston in that time.
In the Sam Houston matchup over the weekend, the Vaqueros were outscored 27-32 in the first half and 34-35 in the second during a 67-61 loss. Leading scorer Justin Johnson put up 20 points with nine rebounds and four assists.
Over on the Tarleton side, their year began at 1-7 overall. Outside of a four-game losing streak in January, things have been much better since then. After losing recent games to Abilene Christian and Utah Valley, the Texans took out Chicago State in their last outing.
On Saturday versus Chicago State, the Texans posted a 42-23 run in the first half. Tarleton kept the pace from there and emerged with a nice 79-60 victory. Tahj Small was the top scorer with 23 points, three assists and five rebounds.
The Texans are 0-5 ATS in their last five at home and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 overall. The over is 5-2 in Tarleton’s last seven at home.
Meanwhile, the Vaqueros are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games and the under is 4-1 in their last five road games. The under is 4-1 in UTRGV’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Tarleton here. The Texans had a couple of rough outings versus Abilene Christian and Utah State with just 119 combined points, but otherwise they’ve been scoring reasonably well over this 4-2 stretch. The last time these teams met up back on January 29, the Texans took a 79-64 road victory. The familiar atmosphere will certainly help Tarleton in this rematch and I think they’ll be fine on a cover.
