The Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros and the Tarleton State Texans meet Tuesday in WAC Tournament college basketball action from Orleans Arena. UTRGV is 15-16 overall on the year. The Vaqueros lost to Cal Baptist in their last game. As for Tarleton State, they’re 16-15 this season following a win over SAGU last Tuesday. UTRGV Vaqueros
Texas-Rio Grande Valley hit a 12-14 run over their first 26 games of the season. The Vaqueros finished on a 3-2 run (with a forfeited matchup versus New Mexico State mixed in), beating Grand Canyon, SAGU and Tarleton State in that time.
Last Wednesday versus Cal Baptist, the Vaqueros were outscored 50-36 by halftime. UTRGV didn’t get any better on a 38-34 second-half deficit and lost 88-70. Ahren Freeman topped the team with 25 points and eight rebounds.
Tarleton State Texans
Over on the Tarleton State side, they managed a 13-12 run over their first 25 games. The Texans finished off the regular season with a 3-3 stretch, beating Utah Tech, Utah Valley and SAGU alongside losses to Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston and UTRGV.
In the SAGU game last Tuesday, the Texans didn’t have any issues. Tarleton State scored 46 points in the first half and another 64 in the second on the way to a blowout win 110-45. Shamir Bogues led the way on 30 points and six rebounds.

I’ll probably take a stab on Tarleton State in this one. We should have a pretty interesting matchup here though, so you could make a case either way. The Texans are a sketchy 4-4 in their last eight games and they’ve been pretty erratic on the scoreboard. The good news is that Tarleton State has scored 77 or more points in three straight. These teams have met twice already, with UTRGV taking both wins. The Vaqueros won 68-65 on the road February 4 and again 99-95 in overtime on February 25 at UTRGV Fieldhouse. This third matchup should be another good one, and I like the Texans to get a little revenge with a cover.
