The McNeese State Cowboys and the TCU Horned Frogs meet Thursday in college basketball action from Schollmaier Arena. McNeese State is coming off a 24-point loss to SMU in their opener. As for the Frogs, this will be the team’s first activity of the season. TCU is coming off a 12-14 campaign last year. McNeese State had a down year in 2020-21, finishing 10-14 overall and just 4-10 in Southland Conference play. That result left the Cowboys only three spots out of the basement in the standings. McNesse’s season ended with a 71-68 loss to SE Louisiana in the First Round of the Southland Tournament.
The Cowboys played SMU on Tuesday for their first action of the season, ultimately falling 86-62. McNeese was outscored 47-31 in the second half on the way to the loss. Brendan Medley-Bacon led the team with his 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Over on the TCU side, they logged a 12-14 overall record last season, finishing 5-11 in Big 12 Conference play. The Frogs ended up ahead of just two teams in the standings: Kansas State at 4-14 and Iowa State at 0-18.
TCU skidded into the postseason last year, losing six of their final seven regular-season games. The Frogs would face Kansas State in the First Round of the Big 12 Tournament, losing 71-54 to close out the campaign.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on TCU, but probably staying away. There are some question marks surrounding the Frogs as they go into this season, mostly due to a hefty amount of transfer turnover. One bright spot is guard Mike Miles, who was a Big 12 All-Freshman last year with 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He’s still with the Frogs and will take a big role this year.
As for McNeese, they did a few good things against SMU in their opener but ultimately couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs, who shot 40 percent from 3-point range and 47 percent from the field. I like the Cowboys to hang around for a while here; should be an interesting matchup.
