The Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Temple Owls meet Saturday in college basketball action from Liacouras Center. Tulsa is 7-13 so far this year. The Hurricane lost to Wichita State in their last outing. As for Temple, they’re 12-7 and coming off a win over East Carolina. Tulsa started out the year at 6-5, then hit a seven-game losing skid versus SMU, Memphis, Temple, Houston, Cincinnati, Memphis and Tulane. After a win over South Florida, the Hurricane dropped another game to Wichita State.
Back on Tuesday versus Wichita State, the Hurricane had a 30-29 lead at the break. Tulsa was outscored 18-29 the rest of the way in a 58-48 loss, though. Sam Griffin was the only one on the team in double-figures with 17 points and five boards.
Over on the Temple side, they went 7-6 over their first 13 games this year. The Owls are 5-1 in their last six outings. Outside of the loss to SMU, the wins have come versus UCF, East Carolina, Tulsa, Cincinnati and East Carolina again.
Matched up against East Carolina on Wednesday, the Owls managed a 28-21 edge in the first half and a 43-41 run from there in a 71-63 win. Tops on the team was Damian Dunn with 26 points, two rebounds, two assists and 13-of-15 from the line.
The Owls are 5-2 ATS in the last seven at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win. Temple is 4-0 ATS in the last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Hurricane are 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games and 20-7 ATS in their last 27 after an ATS loss. The over is 8-3 in Tulsa’s last 11 road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Temple in this one. The Owls haven’t exactly been blowing teams out on the scoreboard over this 5-1 run, but they’re getting the job done on defense. Temple has held the opposition to fewer than 70 points in 10 of their last 11 games, so they’re comfortable in low-scoring situations.
The last time these teams met up on January 12, the Owls posted a 69-64 win. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a higher total here, and ultimately I like Temple to power out the cover.
