Florida Gulf Coast began their year with a matchup versus USC. The Eagles played well in that one and came away with a 74-61 win. In game two, Florida Gulf Coast took on San Diego, but couldn’t replicate the success in a 79-73 loss.
In their third outing of the year versus Ave Maria, the Eagles got back to business with a blowout win. Florida Gulf Coast scored 62 points in the first half on the way to a 105-61 win. Zach Anderson led the way with 22 points, and Isaiah Thompson added 21 points.
Over on the Tennessee side, their year began with in-state opponent Tennessee Tech. The Volunteers were up 27-16 by halftime and rolled to the 75-43 win. Tyreke Key led the team on 17 points with four rebounds, and Zakai Zeigler managed 12 points.
In game two versus Colorado, the Volunteers were only up 34-32 by halftime. Tennessee was outscored 46-32 in the second half and lost the game 78-66. The Volunteers’ top scorer was Key with 15 points. Josiah-Jordan James managed 15 points as well, with eight boards.
PICK: I’m likely going to try Florida Gulf Coast in this one. Also likely not touching it, though. The outcome is going to depend on how well Tennessee rebounds from their upset loss to Colorado back on Sunday. The Vols shot a dismal 25.4 percent (16-of-63) from the floor in that one and were out-rebounded 47-38. As for Florida Gulf Coast, they’re scoring well over the first three games and should be able to hang a nice total here. If Tennessee gets back into form though, it’s going to be tough for the Eagles.
