Tennessee Tech took a step forward last year, improving on the 2020-21 campaign with a 11-21 overall record and a 7-10 mark in Ohio Valley Conference games. That put the Golden Eagles in seventh place in the standings, ahead of SIUE, UT-Martin and Eastern Illinois.
In early February, things were looking grim for the Golden Eagles. They were sitting at just 5-18 at that point, but a strong 7-2 run to finish out the season helped their record cosmetically. After a win over Austin Peay in the OVC Tournament, Tennessee Tech lost to Morehead State.
Over on the Tennessee side, they had a nice season in 2021-22 but it ended pretty suddenly. The Volunteers went 27-8 overall with a 14-4 run in SEC games. After a third-place finish in the standings, the Vols won three straight games to take the SEC Tournament championship.
Tennessee was a consistent team last year, and they went the whole season without losing consecutive games. The Volunteers finished the regular season strong on a 9-1 run. After the tournament win, Tennessee fell to Michigan in the Second Round of the national tourney.
The Eagles are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 overall and 5-20-1 ATS in their last 26 Monday games. Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five at home.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Tennessee, but it’s too thick of a line to mess with. It’s been a long offseason for the Volunteers after that rough loss to Michigan in the national tournament. That said, there’s reason for optimism coming into 2022-23 due to the talent on the squad. Tennessee is committed to playing fast this year, and with their considerable depth they’ll use a host of bench players to keep the tempo up. Sophomore Zakai Zeigler should become a star this season and help anchor the defense after his SEC All-Defensive Team honors last year, and he’s got plenty of experienced talent around him. Should be another good year for the Vols.
