The Texas Longhorns and the Tennessee Volunteers meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. Here’s a Tennessee vs Texas prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Tennessee vs Texas pick.

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

Texas managed to win four of their first five games this year, taking out Lafayette, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kansas City and Rider in that time. A 3-3 stretch came next however, as the Longhorns would fall to Arizona State, Virginia and UConn in that time. After wins over Le Moyne and Maryland Eastern Shore, Texas would sit at 9-4 over their first 13 games of the season.

In the Mississippi State matchup on Saturday, the Longhorns came back from a 48-43 halftime deficit to force overtime. After a 15-12 run from there however, Texas ended up with a tough defeat 101-98. Dailyn Swain topped the team on a double-double with 34 points and 14 rebounds while Tramon Mark had 20 points and three boards. Matas Vokietaitis added 19 points with four rebounds as well.

Tennessee Volunteers Betting Preview

Over on the Tennessee side, they beat Mercer, Northern Kentucky, North Florida, Rice, Tennessee State, Rutgers and Houston in their first seven outings. After losses to Kansas, Syracuse and Illinois in the next three, Tennessee would recover with wins over Louisville, Gardner-Webb and South Carolina State. Over 13 games the Vols had a 10-3 overall record in the books.

Matched up against Arkansas on Saturday the Volunteers were down by one point going into the second half. Tennessee was outscored by 10 points from there and lost 86-75 in the end. Ja’Kobi Gillespie put up 14 points with four assists and Nate Ament had 13 points with three rebounds and three assists. Amari Evans led the team with 16 points and three boards in 22 minutes of action during the loss.

Why the Tennessee Volunteers will win

  • Tennessee has won each of its last 20 games at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Texas has lost four of its last five night games against Conference opponents.
  • Tennessee has won the first half in each of its last eight games at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center.

Why the Texas Longhorns will win

  • Texas has won 11 of its last 13 night games after coming off overtime.
  • Tennessee has lost four of its last five January games as an AP-ranked team.
  • Tennessee has lost the first half in three of its last four games against Conference opponents.

Tennessee vs Texas Prediction

I’ll lean toward Tennessee but you could make a case either way. The Volunteers had a good first half versus Arkansas in their last outing however they couldn’t keep the pace from there. Tennessee ended up shooting 49.2 percent from the field with a 33-29 rebounding advantage and a 44-32 edge in the paint. The Vols were pretty ugly from the line though, hitting just 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) alongside the Razorbacks’ 29-of-33 (87.9 percent) effort. The loss breaks a three-game win streak, but Tennessee still has 75 or more points in all four of those games.

As for Texas, they couldn’t topple Mississippi State in overtime during their last appearance. The Longhorns ended up shooting 47.7 percent from the field in that one with a 41-35 rebounding deficit and 7-of-25 (28 percent) from outside. Texas has 94 or more points in three straight games however, going 2-1 in that time.
