AR-Pine Bluff won just one of their first 12 games, a November 29 victory versus AR Baptist. In the last three however, the Lions are 2-1. They’ve got a loss to Alabama A&M sandwiched between wins over Ecclesia and Alabama State.
In the Alabama State game on Wednesday, the Lions were down 35-34 at halftime. AR-Pine Bluff outscored the Hornets 36-33 from there in a 70-68 comeback win. Leading scorer Shawn Williams put up 22 points with four assists and two rebounds.
Over on the Texas Southern side, they hit an 0-7 run out of the gate this year before finally bagging their first (surprise) win over Florida on December 6. It’s been a 2-1 stretch since then with victories over UTRGV and Grambling State.
Matched up against Grambling State on Wednesday, the Tigers held a 34-29 edge in the first half and a 33-32 run in the second to secure a 67-61 win. PJ Henry led the team on 16 points, and John Walker added 12 points with eight rebounds.
Texas Southern is 4-1 ATS in their last five home magmas and 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 Saturday games. The Tigers are 18-7-1 ATS in the last 26 overall.
Meanwhile, the Lions are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 after a straight-up win and 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The over is 4-0 in ARPB’s last four Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Texas Southern. This ought to be an interesting matchup though; both teams are playing better ball lately. The Tigers are 3-1 in their last four games, and they’ve hit 67 or more points in each of those victories. Texas Southern hadn’t hit that mark in any of their first seven outings. As for AR-Pine Bluff, they’ve hit 70 points in three of their last five. That said, I like Texas Southern to have another good game here and ultimately bag the cover.
