The Texas Southern Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders meet Thursday in college basketball action from United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Southern is 0-1 so far this year after an opener loss to San Francisco. As for Texas Tech, they took care of Northwestern State in a blowout win during their opener. Texas Southern is coming off a highly emotional campaign in 2021-22, going 19-13 overall and 13-5 in the SWAC. The Tigers landed in second place in the standings and were able to win the conference tournament. Texas Southern lost in the First Round of the national tourney, though.
In their first action of the 2022-23 season, the Tigers faced a hot-shooting San Francisco team. Texas Southern gave up 50 points in the first half during a 90-77 loss. Tops in scoring was PJ Henry with 21 points. John Walker added 17 points in 34 minutes as well.
Over on the Texas Tech side, they notched a 27-10 overall record last season, with a 12-6 run in the Big 12. Texas Tech finished in third place in the standings behind Kansas and Baylor. After a Sweet Sixteen run in the national tournament the Raiders fell to Duke.
Texas Tech started out pretty well versus Northwestern State this week, putting up 42 points in the first half in a 73-49 win. Daniel Batcho doubled up with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Both Kevin Obanor and Kerwin Walton added nine points apiece.
PICK: I’m probably leaning Texas Tech but not going near it. The Raiders didn’t have much trouble in their opener versus a cold-shooting Northwestern State team (28.4 percent from the field). Texas Tech shot 52.2 percent themselves along with 43 rebounds and 19 assists, and a lot of different players contributed significant minutes. Considering how permissive Texas Southern was in their opener, I think the Raiders will cruise in this one.
