Illinois got off to a 4-0 start this year with wins over Eastern Illinois, UMKC, Monmouth and UCLA. After a loss to Virginia, Illinois took out Lindenwood and Syracuse before suffering their second loss to Maryland.
Back on Friday versus the Terrapins, Illinois faced a 41-34 deficit going into the second half. The Illini got better from there but still lost 71-66. Terrence Shannon led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds with three assists.
Over on the Texas side, they’ve only played a half-dozen games so far but their record is spotless. The wins have come versus UTEP, Houston Christian, Gonzaga, Northern Arizona, UTRGV and Creighton.
Matched up against Creighton on Thursday, the Longhorns took a five-point lead into halftime. Texas scored 40 points from there in a 72-67 win. Marcuss Carr put up 19 points with five rebounds and five assists, while Tyrese Hunter added 15 points.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Texas. The Longhorns are coming off a nice effort against Creighton, shooting 41.9 percent from the field with 42 rebounds, 15 assists and just three turnovers. Texas’ 3-point shooting wasn’t great (4-of-19) but they still got the win.
As for Illinois, they struggled against a good Maryland team in their last outing despite shooting 44.3 percent from the field with 33 rebounds. The Illini have lost two of their three ranked matchups this year and are in for another tough matchup here. I don’t think they’ll be able to keep the pace if Texas is on point.
