The Southern Jaguars and the Texas Longhorns meet Monday in college basketball action from Moody Center in Austin. Here’s a Texas vs Southern prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Texas vs Southern pick.

Southern Jaguars Betting Preview

Southern opened up the season on a rocky run but they’ve got a couple of wins in the last pair. The Jaguars lost to Arkansas and Marquette in their first two outings, then took victories over Ecclesia and Champion Christian. Two more losses followed versus Washington and San Jose State, then Southern was able to get a couple more victories versus Northwestern State and Louisiana Christian. Over eight games so far the Jaguars have carved out a .500 record at 4-4 this year.

Last Monday versus Louisiana Christian, the Jaguars rolled to a 101-48 blowout win at FG Clark Activity Center. Southern was led by Michael Jacobs on 22 points with eight assists and three rebounds. Cam Amboree added 15 points with four assists, five steals and three boards. leading the team off the bench was Fazl Oshodi with 14 points, two assists and two steals in the winning effort for the Jaguars.

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

Over on the Texas side, they’ve had a few bumps in the road this year but overall they’re not playing too badly. The Longhorns lost to Duke in their opener, then rattled off wins over Lafayette, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kansas City and Rider in the next quartet of outings. Since then it’s been a 2-2 run with wins over Chaminade and NC State sandwiched in between losses to Arizona State and Virginia in that time. Over nine games thus far that gives Texas a 6-3 overall record this season.

Matched up against Virginia on Wednesday at Moody Center, Texas took a pretty rough loss 88-69. The Longhorns got 15 points with 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals from Dailyn Swain, while Jordan Pope was the only other team player to finish in double-digits with 10 points, one rebound and one assist. Chendall Weaver led the team off the bench with nine points and three boards in 20 minutes of work for the Longhorns during the losing effort.

Why the Texas Longhorns will win

  • Southern has lost each of its last 15 road night games against non-Conference opponents.
  • The home team has won seven of Southern’s last eight games.
  • Texas has won the first half in 14 of its last 15 night games against non-Conference opponents at Moody Center.

Why the Southern Jaguars will win

  • Southern has won five of its last six night games following a home win.
  • Texas has lost six of its last eight games when playing with a rest disadvantage.
  • Southern has won the first half in five of its last six games.

Texas vs Southern Prediction

I’ll lean toward Texas but I’m probably not touching this one. The Longhorns posted a pretty listless home loss against a very good Virginia team in their last outing. Texas hit 41 percent from the field and just 21 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range in that one, but did have a 35-34 rebounding edge. The Longhorns gave up 54 percent from the field and 12-of-24 from 3-point range, which helped bury the team in the 19-point loss. The 69 points were Texas’ lowest total since scoring just 60 on Duke in the season opener. Granted, the Longhorns should put up a pretty healthy total on Monday.

As for Southern, they didn’t have too many issues versus Louisiana Christian in their latest outing thanks to 58 percent shooting from the field and a 45-29 rebounding edge. That gives the Jaguars 176 combined points across the last two games, however it goes without saying that it won’t be anywhere near as easy to score on the Longhorns.
