Monmouth is coming off a 12-8 overall season last year with a 12-6 record and a second-place finish in the MAAC standings. The Hawks’ postseason ended quickly with a 79-60 loss to Fairfield in the first game of the MAAC Tournament.
Monmouth took a tough loss to Charlotte 68-66 in their opener this week. The Hawks outscored the opposition 43-36 in the second half but it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap. Walker Miller led the team with 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Over on the Towson side, they had a rough year in 2020-21 with a 4-14 overall record and a 3-9 finish in the CAA games. The Tigers finished just one spot out of the basement in the standings, and lost to Elon in the first game of the conference tourney.
Towson scored 39 points in the first half and 38 points in the second on the way to a 77-56 win over Albany in their first game this week. The Tigers’ top scorer was Terry Nolan with 17 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Towson is 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 overall. The Tigers are 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games and 1-6 ATS in the last seven overall. Monmouth is 0-4 ATS in the last four Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Towson. The Tigers are coming off a rough year, but their first outing of 2021-22 went well. Towson had four players in double-digit points and the team shot 46.9 percent from the field overall. The Tigers also pulled down 45 rebounds and 14 assists in the win.
As for Monmouth, they had the edge over Charlotte in a lot of categories during their loss, but the 15 turnovers and 21 fouls certainly didn’t help. I like Monmouth to play a solid game here but Towson seems a better cover option overall.
