Loyola matched up against Fairleigh Dickinson in their first game of the year. The Ramblers were up 41-39 at the break and needed overtime to preserver a win 88-82. Demetre Roberts topped the team with 22 points, four boards and four assists.
In game two versus UIC, the Ramblers managed another solid outing. Loyola held a modest three-point halftime lead and turned it into a 70-63 win. Philip Alston led the way on 18 points and seven boards. Ben Schwieger added 14 points as well.
Over on the Tulsa side, their year began with a matchup versus Oregon State. The Hurricane was up 44-28 at halftime but blew the lead and lost 73-70 after a 45-26 deficit in the second. Sam Griffin was tops in scoring on 29 points.
In game two against Jackson State, Tulsa took care of business and got their first win. The Hurricane managed 37 points in the first half and 48 more in the second in a win 85-79. Keyshawn Embery-Simpson led the team with 20 points and six assists.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Loyola. I could probably go either way on this one, though. The Ramblers have put together a couple of good outings so far, even though each game was fairly close. Loyola shot a nice 55.1 percent in the UIC game, but the 3-point shooting was off with a 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) mark. As for Tulsa, I think they can keep the pace pretty easily in this one if the team is shooting well. I like Loyola to pull out a tight cover, but I’m probably staying away from this one.
